Shadow Work And Facing That Dark Side
Getting into shadow work means facing the darker parts of yourself, the bits you might not be too proud of.
It’s like opening a door to a room where you’ve stored all your embarrassing messes and reminders of your past mistakes. But here’s the twist – facing this darkness is incredibly powerful.
Here’s an example…
Years ago, I held a vision of myself as a good wife and mother. One that tends to ALL of the needs of my very young children. I believed that by always making myself available to them, I was upholding my identity as the perfect mom who does everything. Just to be clear, I LOVED doing everything…or at tleast trying to do everything.
Then the shadow showed up.
This unusual opportunity to go to Hawaii and train to teach bellydance with my favorite teacher. I had been practicing with her VHS tape for many years and and loved the way I felt when I practiced.
Even though I had no desire to teach bellydance…
Even though I knew that there was no way I could wean my son from breastfeeding and leave my family even if I WAS going to do something as superfluous as this….
Even though I knew the first day of the curriculum was on my oldest son’s birthday and there was NO WAY my husband would understand even if I could think of a good reason to do something as outlandish as this..
The shadow version of me had wayyyy more independent adventures in mind and semingly ‘irresponsible’ thoughts.
The desire to travel alone to HI was too juicy to even fully think about.
OMG, a 10 hour flight in silence? Ommmmmm.
The wanting-ness to spend 5 days with goddess women dancing was an overwhelmingly exciting possibility for this mom of boys, up to her ears in laundry, toy cars and monster trucks.
Right then, the husband slipped in all quiet ‘caught me’ pricing flights..
I wasn’t even CONSIDERING actually booking this trip, just looking.
Busted. I had to explain it and tried to dismiss it.
He loved the idea, said that I deserved a trip like that.
I burst into tears.
He held me and said I’d be great at teaching.
I cried some more.
He said ”You probably need some time away from the house, from the boys, from all of us”…he laughed, but I cried harder.
I’m telling you, if that Scorpio man did not walk up behind my desk and see me fantasizing flights with my shadow…I would not have went. Very serious.
I love that he witnessed my shadow self…and loved her harder.
I came back from that trip more integrated than ever, totally turned on, and ready to love my family more fiercely. Next I began teaching group fitness and empowering others to love themselves and their partners more though understanding their own shadow selves.
Who would have thought my ‘shadow desires’ held so many blessings?
Certainly not me. But now I know.
You can use this to YOUR advantage too.
Here’s the thing, when you penetrate your subconscious, you’ve got an opportunity to uncover and stop the destructive thought patterns and negative self talk…and you get a chance to love the parts of you that you don’t often give a voice to..and you give OTHERS the chance to love those parts too.
Flow with this timing.
